My name is {user_data~First Name} {user_data~Last Name}, and I am a Vancouver resident. I’m writing today to share my deep concerns about the surprise motion coming up next Wednesday, May 20th, to reverse the city’s flagship climate policies for buildings.

This very Council has already voted to maintain these important policies, so I don’t understand why we’re revisiting them now. Back in November 2024, when Council debated a motion to rescind zero carbon construction policies for new buildings, thousands of people like me wrote and called you to let you know how strongly we support them. Reversing course now, without meaningful public consultation, makes little sense and is a threat to our municipal democracy.

Experts have made clear that building all-electric is one of the easiest and most affordable actions we can take to protect our community from increasing climate disasters. The City of Vancouver staff’s data shows that it takes the same amount of time to build and is cost comparable for buyers, with heat pumps providing energy and even cost savings over time, since they’re far more efficient than gas furnaces.

What’s more, burning gas in buildings is responsible for close to 60% of Vancouver’s climate pollution, and transitioning over to highly efficient electric space and water heating will dramatically slash these emissions.

I have long been proud to live in a city with such clear and consistent climate leadership, which is why I'm so dismayed to see this important bylaw once again under threat with barely any opportunity for public input or engagement.

Already, twelve communities in the Greater Vancouver region have followed our lead with their own zero carbon building policies and more are following suit. Why would Vancouver move completely out of step with the rest of the region?

Please protect and uphold Vancouver's data-backed climate bylaw for new buildings. I look forward to hearing more about your stance on reducing emissions in new buildings, and the importance of getting back on track to meeting Vancouver’s climate goals.
