Canada’s largest public pension funds are considering investments in risky LNG projects in British Columbia. That means gambling our retirement savings on financially risky, polluting projects.

LNG is not the solution that the industry and federal government have greenwashed it to be. It’s expensive, volatile, and polluting, all the way from fracking to liquefaction to export.

I am writing to urge you to reject any investment in LNG projects.

It is deeply concerning to see pension funds considering significant investments in fossil fuel infrastructure, which are both financially and environmentally risky.

LNG is expensive, volatile, and new projects take years to build. The only currently operating LNG facility has major operational issues. Gas demand is projected to peak and decline in the coming years, leaving assets stranded and pension holders exposed to significant losses.

Pension funds have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of their beneficiaries - including people like me. That responsibility includes avoiding the unnecessary risk and volatility of LNG, while recognizing the growing economic advantage of renewable energy, which is more stable, cost-effective, and aligned with a climate-safe future for everyone. 
  
I don’t want my retirement funds put at risk. Canadian’s pensions should be invested in a future that is stable, not tied to projects that increase costs, harm communities, and deepen the climate crisis.

I urge you to demonstrate leadership by refusing to invest in LNG and its expansion and prioritizing climate-safe investments instead.
