On Monday, May 11, the City of Salmon Arm council will reconsider the Zero Carbon Step Code policy after postponing last month’s vote. But Council still needs to hear from more residents as soon as possible, urging them to make the right decision.
In 2023, the Province gave local governments the power to reduce climate pollution from new buildings – if the city chooses to. This policy would ensure new homes are built to modern standards using clean, efficient electricity.
By using proven heat pump technology to provide heating and cooling instead of gas hookups, all-electric homes are simpler and more cost-effective to build. This means less climate pollution, lower energy bills and homes that are built for today – not outdated systems that will need to be replaced.
Many builders across B.C. are already delivering these homes, such as in Rossland, Nelson, and Maple Ridge, which have adopted the same policy. Now is our opportunity to let Salmon Arm Council know residents want the city to take climate action that aligns with the city’s Official Community Plan.
Will you email the Mayor and Council today to adopt an ambitious Zero Carbon Step Code without delay?
