Stop the Tilbury LNG project

FortisBC wants to expand the Tilbury LNG plant along a fragile part of the Fraser River, in Delta, British Columbia. If we don’t speak out now, this project could have devastating impacts on nearby communities, critical habitat for marine life, and our climate.

Both the federal and provincial governments need to approve the expansion. There is a formal process to gather technical and community information and opinions on the project, but your elected representatives also have a say. That means letters, submissions, and public opposition can directly undermine the case for the project and support our climate and energy goals.

If we can keep the momentum going and make it clear this project doesn’t have public support, we have a real opportunity to stop the expansion.

I’m writing to ask you to stop FortisBC’s proposal to expand its Tilbury LNG Project, an LNG facility along a fragile part of the Fraser River in Metro Vancouver.

An accident or spill of LNG would endanger residents and could ignite into a massive fireball. The South Arm of the Fraser River is a dynamic area with the potential for unexpected weather or the risk of ignition from human activity. Fortis has not sufficiently provided evidence of scenario modelling or emergency notification plans for residents in the case of a spill, counting on too many factors to go perfectly right. The risks are too great to allow this project to proceed unchecked.

Expanding British Columbia's LNG infrastructure will hold back Canada's climate commitments and lock in about 1 million tonnes of GHG emissions each year for decades to come. LNG is made from fracked methane gas, a highly polluting fossil fuel that is 86 times worse than carbon dioxide for warming our planet. Methane gas leaks into the atmosphere while extracting, transporting, and using LNG. Those leaks go massively under-reported.

A significant amount of LNG from Tilbury would be used to fuel and expand shipping by transporting and exporting 2.5 million tonnes of fracked LNG annually. While it might sound like a cleaner option to switch ships away from conventional marine fuels and on to LNG, pollution from unburned methane that slips from the engines actually undermines any potential benefits of switching off dirty fuels. We need to transition to technologies that reduce the total life-cycle of GHG emissions, including energy-saving technologies, wind-assisted propulsion, zero-emission fuels, batteries, and fuel cells.

It’s time to decarbonize Canada’s economy and invest in healthy, climate-safe solutions instead.

Finally, this project could have devastating impacts on critical habitat for marine life. Increasing noisy and polluting ship traffic for LNG would stack the odds against orca whales that already struggle to find food in the busy ocean highway of the Salish Sea.

For the sake of ocean wildlife, our climate, and our communities, I urge you to reject FortisBC’s Tilbury LNG expansion project.
