Reject the Second Narrows Dredging Project

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is proposing the Second Narrows Dredging Project, which would deepen and alter parts of the channel east of the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge to improve shipping efficiency and allow vessels to load more fully, including those from the Trans Mountain pipeline terminal.

Dredging disturbs contaminated sediments, re-exposing habitat to historical pollution. The Burrard Inlet connects directly to critical habitat for the endangered Southern Resident killer whale — a population already struggling due to vessel noise, declining salmon stocks, and toxic pollution.

The Port Authority is accepting public comments until March 22, 2026, as part of its environmental review process.

As a Vancouver resident, I am deeply concerned about the proposed Second Narrows Dredging Project.

Endangered Southern Resident killer whales are already struggling due to vessel noise, declining salmon stocks, and toxic pollution. Their critical habitat is connected to Burrard Inlet, meaning this dredging project could have devastating consequences for a species already fighting to survive.

Dredging disturbs contaminated sediments, putting pollutants back into the water column and re-exposing marine habitats to historical contamination. This threatens marine life, water quality, and the health of our entire coastal ecosystem.

At a time when we should be prioritizing the protection and recovery of endangered species and their habitats, projects that introduce additional environmental risks should not move forward.

I urge the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to reject this dredging proposal and prioritize the health of Burrard Inlet, marine life, and the coastal community.
