Tell Mark Carney to uphold the tanker ban and protect the B.C. coast

An oil tanker oil spill in the ocean

A new agreement between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is paving the way for a new tar sands crude oil pipeline that would send hundreds of mega tankers along the vulnerable B.C. Pacific coast.

Instead of investing in genuine nation-building projects like wind energy or high speed rail, Carney and Smith are trying to ram through a dangerous new pipeline that uproots decades of progress on protected coastal waters from dangerous oil spills.

A federal moratorium on oil tankers in coastal waters of B.C. stretching from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Alaska has existed since 1970 and was strengthened and enshrined into law in 2019, affirming the critical value of this region to coastal communities, First Nations, and marine life. Now, Carney is pushing to eliminate the tanker ban and greenlight one – or more – massive new tar sands pipelines

We have fought these senseless projects before and we will again. Our answer now is the same as it was back in 2016, when we defeated the Northern Gateway pipeline – we stand with Coastal First Nations and the millions of British Columbians who don't want the coast to become another sacrifice zone.

Your reckless push for a new bitumen pipeline depends on reversal of the tanker ban and will run up against the resistance of First Nations and hundreds of thousands of British Columbians, who don’t want the coast to become a sacrifice zone.

At the UN climate talks in Brazil, over 80 countries called for a roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels. And some, from China to Pakistan, are making unprecedented leaps forward in renewable energy generation, particularly solar power, while their demand for oil and gas is flatlining. By contrast, Canada, under your leadership, is moving in the wrong direction.

We are calling on you to stop your climate backsliding, uphold the tanker ban and protect the B.C. Pacific coast from dangerous tar sands tankers.
