Broken promises on old growth

Communities around B.C. have once again risen up together to demand an immediate halt to old growth destruction and biodiversity loss. Grassroots groups are leading the way to call for conservation funding for Indigenous Nations, transparency, ecological integrity, and a real shift toward sustainable forest stewardship.

The B.C. government promised to do this in the fall of 2020 when it committed to implementing the recommendations of its self appointed Old Growth Strategic Review Panel. But, BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is still auctioning off these culturally and ecologically irreplaceable forests to logging corporations as the Ministry of Forests and Premier’s office walk back their commitments.

With the climate and biodiversity crises deepening, it's integral that the last old growth is safeguarded to protect us from intensified fires and floods.

I’m joining thousands of concerned citizens who came together for a province-wide action on November 18 to express my disappointment in the B.C. government and BC Timber Sales for re-entrenching status quo logging across the province. Instead of following through on commitments that were made to implement the recommendations of the Old Growth Strategic Review Panel, decision makers in government and forestry are moving backwards. The most recent recommendations made by the BCTS Review Panel are a perfect example of this.

Meanwhile, the old growth and biodiversity loss crises deepen, as was recently encapsulated in the independent report “Closer to the brink – The state of the forest in B.C. in 2025.” Other recently released research by Stand.earth shows that in some cases old growth trees are being ground down into wood pellets and shipped overseas to burn for electricity in Drax’s coal-converted power plants. While other standing old growth remains under threat from fracked gas pipeline right-of-ways like PRGT.

There is an opportunity right now for the BC NDP to transition away from old growth logging towards a real shift toward sustainable forest stewardship and a regenerative economy. I am one of many calling for this, alongside conservation funding for Indigenous Nations, transparency and ecological integrity. Viable solution pathways have been outlined clearly and now it's time to follow through.,
