Protect old growth from burning for electricity

Our new research has uncovered a shocking truth: Drax, the coal giant-turned-“sustainable energy” company, is purchasing rare, irreplaceable old growth in British Columbia, Canada and turning these trees into wood pellets to fuel power plants overseas.

And here’s the kicker: Drax is receiving millions in subsidies from the Canadian and BC governments meant for climate solutions. This money is propping up the destruction of forests, and these wood pellets are being burned for electrical power in the UK and Japan, contributing to even more pollution. Drax’s biomass power station is still the UK’s largest emitter by far, despite its greenwashing.

We need to shine a light on the lack of protections for old growth, and an influx of global support could make a difference from trees staying in the ground instead of at the chopping block.

Will you join me in signing this petition calling on B.C. to do the right thing and protect old growth forests?

For years we have been asking for protection of old growth forests and we’ve heard nothing but countless empty promises. Not only are you allowing precious old growth forests to be clearcut, you’re also funding the industry that is burning them. We are collectively calling on you and the entire government of British Columbia to end subsidies to the destructive biomass industry and protect old growth forests.
