We call on you to end all financial support for new and expanded liquefied “natural” gas (LNG) projects, particularly LNG export terminals and related pipelines.
LNG is not a “transition fuel”—it's a climate and health catastrophe, and a bad investment for banks. LNG is primarily methane gas, a climate pollutant 80 times more potent that carbon dioxide over a 20 year period.
Despite a looming LNG oversupply, gas companies are racing to build new LNG export facilities across North America, which will lock in climate-polluting energy for decades and harm the health of local communities.
Your institution provides financing via lending, underwriting, and advisory services that enable LNG expansion.
We demand that your bank:
- End all lending, underwriting, and advisory services for new or expanded LNG projects;
- End corporate level financing for companies developing new and expanded LNG supplies;
- Remedy the health and environmental harms caused by LNG projects to local communities and invest in thriving, sustainable communities.
Banks including ING, BNP Paribas, and HSBC have already taken steps to end their funding for LNG—the question is whether you will lead or be left behind.
Stop bankrolling the LNG glut—it’s time to fund the future instead of the polluting past.
