NY has been showing great leadership on protecting people and climate this year, but your voice is needed to turn one win into law.
In addition to getting the All-Electric Buildings Law into the state code (hooray!), NY passed a new law this year to stop the practice where current gas customers pay to expand the gas system. Now Governor Hochul needs to sign that into law.
The legislature voted to protect New Yorkers and the planet by repealing the “100-foot rule.” Before the repeal, gas utilities offered “free” new gas hookups for buildings within 100 feet of a gas service line by making existing customers pick up the tab. This practice costs customers $200 million per year. It also grows gas infrastructure that is bad for health and climate. While All-Electric will be enforced starting next year, there are still several years ahead when larger buildings will be able to choose gas. We don’t want any incentives for fossil fuels while the state is going All-Electric.
Your voice is critical to making sure the Governor signs this bill and makes it the law of the land.
