With a new LNG Canada terminal online in British Columbia, the threat of methane to our communities is about to explode as the number of fracking wells grows dramatically to supply this new demand.

The oil and gas industry should no longer get away with business-as-usual — especially when it comes to its methane emissions. Methane is leaking into the atmosphere at alarming rates and B.C’s current regulations are simply not enough to rein it in.

It’s time to stop adding fuel to the fire, and to hold our elected leaders accountable by calling for strong and effective action to reduce climate pollution from B.C’s oil and gas industry.

Methane is over eighty times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and here in Canada, the oil and gas sector is the largest source of methane emissions.

This means that eliminating this source of pollution is one of the most urgent actions that governments can take to address climate change and get us back on track to achieving our targets, Fortunately this is not only doable with current technologies, it is one of the most cost effective ways to reduce the emissions of oil and gas companies.

Stand.earth’s recent report Methane: LNG’s dirty secret  lays out five steps that the B.C. government can take, as part of the upcoming review of their oil and gas methane regulations, to accelerate the goal of reaching near zero methane emissions from the sector by 2030.

These recommendations include:

1. Monthly leak detection and repair.
2. Eliminate routine venting and flaring
3. Switch to low and zero-emission technology
4. Comprehensive Monitoring and Reporting
5. Uphold the polluter pay principle
