No more logging in caribou forests: tell Ministry of Forests staff not to sign off on extinction

Southern mountain caribou are critically endangered in British Columbia, as the old forests they need continue to be logged.

There are thousands of hectares of pending logging approvals in old forests that 3 of the southernmost – and most endangered – caribou herds depend on for their survival. Local Ministry of Forests staff are responsible for approving these permits.

I’m writing to you as a concerned citizen who’s deeply alarmed by what’s happening in our province. Right now, vast areas of habitat critical to endangered southern mountain caribou — including the Columbia North, Groundhog, and Wells Gray South herds — are on the chopping block, pending logging approvals.

We’re not talking about minor impacts. These caribou are hanging on by a thread, and their habitat has already been devastatingly degraded. Every new road, every clearcut, pushes them closer to extinction.

Your office has a pivotal role to play in either putting caribou on a path to extinction, or recovery. While elected officials have stalled on commitments to protect old growth, your position means that with every new permit that comes to your desk, you could now be complicit in extinction. If your Ministry keeps sacrificing old growth and primary forests in endangered caribou habitat, you’re not just allowing extinction — you’re enabling it.

I’m urging you, as someone with decision-making authority, to stop approving new permits in endangered caribou habitat. Take a stand. Push for change. We don’t get a second chance once they’re gone.
