Send hard-hitting proof of old growth logging to the Minister of Forests

As you may know, the B.C. government's logging data is all over the place, and their deferral plan is like a bad mystery novel – nobody knows what's going on and old growth is getting the axe.

We need to see B.C. NDP honour its commitments and rebuild public trust, by putting an end to logging old growth in the most at-risk forests – especially where there are active cut blocks or imminent logging plans.

Organizations, unions, and residents of this province have been asking the B.C. government to provide transparent and accessible old growth logging data for years.

In the face of more broken promises, Stand.earth had to get creative and launch its own watchdog: Forest Eye, a public tool that allows anyone to monitor ongoing old growth logging in B.C. Without accessible and transparent reporting from your government, I and many others have turned to Forest Eye for information that you promised and – since the tool relies on your government’s data – could easily provide.

A recent Forest Eye alert shows West Fraser Mills Ltd logging 32 hectares of old growth in near Spring Lake in the Cariboo Natural Resource Region in April 2025.

I have seen hundreds of alerts like these, which clearly indicate that what the B.C. government has been telling the public about the current state of old growth is misleading. Big corporations like Canfor and West Fraser are continuing to log rare, at-risk old growth forests that expert scientists (working for you) mapped for emergency logging bans, known as candidate deferrals.

Additionally, the B.C. government has not provided First Nations adequate, proactive funding to make old growth deferrals a viable economic option. Representative bodies like the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs have asked your government to stop "abdicating its responsibility" and move away from this "consent by coercion" model.

I urge you to make the right decision and finally take meaningful action at the scale and urgency that is required to fulfill the B.C. government’s promises for old growth.
