Sign the petition to urge Minister Guilbeault to protect endangered caribou in British Columbia from local extinction

For over a decade, Environment Canada has delayed fulfilling its legal obligations to southern mountain caribou in B.C. under the Species at Risk Act. In the last 20 years, 8 of the 18 southernmost herds have gone locally extinct. Every year that passes without action brings us closer to losing this iconic species forever.

We’re urging the federal government to stop dragging its feet and comply with its legal responsibilities to safeguard endangered mountain caribou herds. A critical habitat map is essential for their protection, and the good news is, the B.C. government already developed maps in 2020 that can easily be incorporated into the federal recovery strategy!

Sign the petition calling on Minister Guilbeault and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Canada to finally complete the identification of critical southern mountain caribou habitat and prevent further destruction.

You have the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by taking steps to protect an iconic species, southern mountain caribou. I urge you to complete the identification of critical habitat for the Southern Group, and begin protecting that caribou habitat from further destruction as soon as possible. The BC government already has maps developed in 2020 that could easily be incorporated into an amended recovery strategy, which must be published this spring. This is your chance to do better for caribou.
