Here’s the good news: New York passed some first-in-the-nation buildings policies for the climate, workers, and communities, like the All-Electric Building Law.
But there’s also bad news: there are still some major roadblocks between New Yorkers and safer, healthier, more equitable energy in buildings.
It’s time to get rid of roadblocks with NY HEAT.
If Governor Hochul includes NY HEAT in her Executive Budget, it has a strong chance of becoming law this year.
NY HEAT will limit energy bills to 6% of household income (NYers with lower incomes spend on average almost twice that now). It will also phase out the line extension allowances, where current gas customers pay to expand the system for new customers. This means that utilities will start investing in modern technologies, like heat pumps and thermal energy networks instead. NY HEAT means lower emissions and less overall pollution for communities and the planet, lower energy bills for customers, and new jobs and protections for workers.
SAFE Cities at Stand.earth has been working with the groups from the Renewable Heat Now campaign to get NY HEAT passed.
Your voice is critical to getting NY HEAT included in the Governor’s budget.
