Help move Winnipeg toward green buildings!

Winnipeg is about to decide whether to conduct a study on how to phase out “natural” gas (i.e. fossil/fracked gas) from buildings.

Currently, the burning of gas to heat homes and businesses accounts for 44% of the city’s emissions.

But that doesn’t have to be the case. There are cleaner and more affordable ways to heat buildings.

Tell the Environment Committee to study the options and pave the way for less climate pollution and healthier communities!

I would like to express my enthusiastic support for a report you are considering to assess the pathways for phasing out natural gas in buildings.

With 44% of Winnipeg’s emissions stemming from fossil fuel building heating, this is one of the most important actions the council can take to decrease community emissions (and prevent an increase in pollution that harms our health and the climate).

Not only would phasing out gas bring down emissions, it would also lower our monthly energy bills and make our homes safer.

It is a no brainer to conduct this study and to proceed with local policies to transition to clean heating solutions.

Already, municipalities across Canada are taking matters into their own hands and introducing strong policies to phase out gas in new and existing buildings.

As a resident of Winnipeg, I would like our city to join other climate leaders to take climate action at the local level to lower our emissions and make life more affordable for us residents. 
 
I urge you to vote “yes” on the motion to commission a report on phasing out gas in buildings.
