The climate can’t wait: Canada must act quickly to introduce a strong cap on oil and gas emissions

Canada is about to make a critical climate decision.

The oil and gas sector is Canada’s largest source of greenhouse gas pollution, totaling a third of all our emissions. But on November 4th, the federal government introduced new draft regulations to finally put a limit on greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas industry.

The Emissions Cap – if implemented quickly – is a vital opportunity to combat climate change like we mean it.

Despite expensive ad campaigns promising to reach net zero, emissions from Canada’s fossil fuel sector have only continued to spike higher. But the era of tolerating climate denial is over, and it’s long past time for Canada’s oil and gas industry to clean up its act. It’s time for it to join other sectors – like electricity, transportation and buildings – that have been working overtime to pick up the slack to reduce climate pollution.

It’s been a long and uphill battle to get to this stage, as rich oil and LNG lobbyists have continued to disrupt real progress by finding ways for the industry to buy its way out of climate action.

We’re in a climate emergency, and there’s no time left for messing around – these final draft regulations need to be fossil fool-proof. By closing the remaining loopholes like flexible compliance mechanisms and offsets that allow big polluters to do anything except sufficiently curb their emissions, the Emissions Cap can be strengthened enough to finally reign in this reluctant polluter.

We can’t wait any longer. Add your name to tell the federal government to turn the Emissions Cap into law without delay.

The federal government must act quickly to close any remaining loopholes and turn Canada’s Oil and Gas Emissions Cap into law:

No more delays: these regulations must be finalized and implemented immediately, ideally ahead of the federal budget and the 2025 election.

Ramp up the ambition: We’re calling on the federal government to align these regulations with Canada’s climate goal of a 40-45 per cent emissions reduction by 2030.

Go further to usher in a just transition: These regulations are just the beginning. We call on the government to go further to advance a transition away from fossil fuels towards a 100 per cent renewable energy future. That means investment in Indigenous-owned and community-led climate solutions and investments in training programs for workers.
