Amazon Rainforest in a State of Emergency

The latest research has shown that the Amazon has lost an area about the size of Germany and France combined to deforestation. Unprecedented drought has left the Amazon basin at an all-time low. Last month, an unnatural flood-ravaged Ecuador’s capital city, Quito, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. This is not the natural state of the Amazon, and if we don’t do something, it will get even worse.

Countries like Ecuador and Peru are approving new oil and gas extraction, while Brazil has cleared large chunks of the rainforest to feed the world's appetite for beef. As the appetite for extraction grows, the people who call the Amazon home are paying a hefty price.

For decades, oil spills have poisoned the food and water of Indigenous communities and the governments have done little to mitigate damages. Now, as more roads cut deeper into the forest, more frontline communities are at risk of losing their home and livelihoods.

Without the urgency of declaring a state of emergency for the Amazon, the nine countries and the global community will not move fast enough to protect this vital region. Declaring a state of emergency will unlock the financial means to secure urgent protection, expedite policies to cut off Big Oil and other devastating extractive industries and focus global attention on Amazonia.

I’m signing this petition to urge the nine Amazonian countries to declare a state of emergency for the Amazon before its too late. The latest research shows that the Amazon has lost an area about the size of Germany and France combined to deforestation. Unprecedented drought has left the Amazon basin at an all-time low. An unnatural flood ravaged Ecuador’s capital city, Quito last month – displacing hundreds of thousands of people. This is not the natural state of the Amazon – and if we don’t do something, it will get even worse. That’s why I’m adding my name to join a global movement that is calling for urgent and permanent protection of Amazonia. There is no livable and safe climate without the Amazon rainforest.
