NYC's groundbreaking law to limit emissions from large buildings is under attack.
Local Law 97 faces a threat from a bill called Intro 772, which would change how the size of many buildings is calculated to make their emissions look lower than they are. In essence, it's a big fat loophole that luxury condos with courtyards and exclusive green spaces could take advantage of, to the detriment of health and the climate.
New Yorkers deserve better. The Council needs to reject this bill.
Local Law 97 cuts fossil fuel use by ramping up energy efficiency and the transition to electric appliances in existing buildings, which also means fewer kids exposed to the asthma risks of gas stoves. In short, it means a safer, healthier NYC for all of us as well as a major decrease in climate pollution.
There has been a lot of pressure from real estate bigwigs to weaken the law and they already have won some big concessions from Mayor Adams.
It's time for the Council to say no more.
SAFE Cities at Stand.earth is working with local partners like New York Communities for Change on making NYC’s buildings healthy and safe for people and the planet. That means rejecting Intro 772.
Will you send a message to the City Council right now, urging them to reject Intro 772 and defend Local Law 97?
After you send your message, you may be contacted by trusted local partners about ways to help your voice go further.
