In 2021, the environmental movement successfully stopped Coalspur’s Vista Coal Mine from being built. Now, the project is back from the dead.
Vista was a proposed open pit thermal coal mine in Alberta designed for extraction and export. Through sustained collective pressure, we convinced then Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson to “designate” the project as being too risky to move forward.
Thermal coal is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels in existence, and the process of mining, transporting, and burning it wreaks havoc on the environment, the climate, and human health. A recent court ruling on the Impact Assessment Act has voided the dangerous Vista Coal Mine’s designation, but this project is as risky as ever.
It’s time for Canada to take responsibility for the devastating effects that coal will have on communities overseas like air pollution and respiratory illnesses.
Add your name to demand that Vista be redesignated and that the federal government uphold its commitment to phase out thermal coal mining in Canada.
I’m calling on the federal government to uphold its commitment to phase out thermal coal mining in Canada, and to redesignate the Vista Coal Mine as a dangerous project that should not proceed.
