With the White House’s recent pause on new LNG export permits, Citi has an opportunity to make a major climate-safe decision that would positively affect the world.

The White House ruling affirms that building new LNG export facilities is ill-advised and not sustainable. The decision underlines the massive financial risks to developing and investing in new polluting facilities. This is a clear sign that Citi should immediately cut ties with LNG and stop financing projects at risk of  becoming stranded assets.

Additionally, the pursuit of profit should never outweigh the health and lives of people who live near existing and proposed LNG facilities. LNG export terminals have long been known to be massive public health hazards that release harmful toxins and pollutants into surrounding communities. Individuals who live near these facilities deal with symptoms like respiratory irritation, dizziness, and headaches — with long-term exposure connected to cancers, heart disease, and asthma.

Continuing to invest in LNG is not only a waste of corporate money, it’s also immoral to continue to finance projects that are proven to harm wellbeing and lives.

Citi must take this as a signal that the end of the fossil fuel era is here. We encourage you to dramatically ramp up investing in renewables, not more polluting mega fossil fuel projects that only warm our Earth and harm our communities.

Make the choice to be a part of the fight for a fossil free world. This future is achievable and so necessary for future generations.
