Tell Minnesota State Board of Investment: Stop Investing in Climate Destruction

Light blue background with green shape of the state of Minnesota. Sketch art of a beaming sun, windmills, and riverbed. Text reads "Minnesota Divestment Coalition"

The Minnesota Divestment Coalition is calling on all climate justice allies to help push the Minnesota State Board of Investment (SBI) to stop investing our pension funds in climate destruction.

The state pension fund has $135 billion in its coffers that should be used to support an environmentally sustainable economy. The SBI Director’s proposed Road Map for managing climate risk will be presented in the next few months. Now is the time for the public to bring pressure on SBI members to ensure that our investments genuinely lead towards a sustainable economy and a healthy planet that our children can enjoy.

Tell the SBI that in order to foster a sustainable future, our investments must adhere to the following principles:

  1. Divest from fossil fuel companies starting with tar sands oil companies and fossil fuel bonds. Tell them that engaging with businesses that exist to make money on fossil fuels is wasted effort.
  2. Stop investing in the unproven boondoggles of carbon capture and decarbonizing the ocean.
  3. Do not invest in private equity companies without ironclad contracts that a) exclude fossil fuel investments; and b) commit to not obstructing a just climate transition through political contributions, lobbying or advertising.
  4. Invest in the green energy future. We have the solutions we need now.

Send a message to SBI members asking that these four principles be reflected in the Road Map currently under development.
