Tell Prime Minister Trudeau and his ministers: Increase support for heat pumps!

Canada is about to stop accepting new applicants into its national program that provides heat pump incentives to residents across the country. This couldn't come at worse time – we desperately need to transition to electric heating to decrease energy bills and reduce climate pollution.

Electric heat pumps are a much cleaner alternative for heating our homes than “natural” gas (more accurately: fossil gas) or other fossil fuels like oil. Heat pumps run on electricity and are more efficient, leading to negligible emissions and lower monthly energy bills for residents. What’s more, heat pumps double as cooling systems in the summer and can purify indoor air. They’re a win-win-win for the climate, public health, and our wallets.

We need more, not less support to install heat pumps across the country. And new buildings should come equipped with these clean devices in the first place.

Let’s demand the federal government increase support and funding to retrofit homes and require new buildings run on electric heat pumps!

Thank you for working on a Green Buildings Strategy to tackle one of our country’s biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions at this critical moment when we’re about to build millions of new homes.

I ask you to please use all legislative tools available to require new homes to be built to run on electric heat pumps rather than fossil fuels like “natural” gas. I also request that you increase funding and support for heat pump retrofits in existing buildings.

Switching to heat pumps for heating will help bring down stubborn national emissions, make monthly energy bills more affordable for residents, improve the air quality in homes, ensure everyone has access to proper heating and cooling, and avoid the costly construction of gas infrastructure which will soon become stranded assets.

I therefore call on you to incorporate the following measures in your Green Buildings Strategy and accompanying legislation:

- Require all new buildings to use highly efficient electric space and water heating by Jan 2026
- Enhance the Canada Greener Homes program’s ability to catalyze heat pump adoption in the near term by increasing the maximum rebate amount, improving accessibility of the program, speeding up rebate timelines, providing additional information and direction regarding process and contractors, and removing fossil fuel companies as intermediaries of rebates (for example, Enbridge Gas in Ontario)
- Provide individuals, municipalities, and provinces with expertise, resources, and technical advice to support and guide the transition to electric heat pumps for heating and cooling

Working towards zero-carbon buildings is a simple measure you can take to rein in Canada’s emissions, ensure we meet our climate commitments, and pave the way to a more equitable and healthy society.
