Email B.C. decision makers: revealing the truth about old growth logging

We’ve just released analysis from old growth monitoring tool, Forest Eye, showing that more than half of the most at-risk old growth areas – where the B.C. government should have implemented an emergency logging ban two years ago – have now been destroyed.

Big industry players like Canfor, West Fraser, and Sinclar Group are the culprits that have been predominantly benefitting from this destruction. What used to be millions of hectares of some of the most biodiverse forest ecosystems on the planet, are today some of the most fragmented and devastated landscapes.

This damning evidence shows that there’s no time to waste – decision-makers must act now to save what’s left. With a provincial election year coming up in B.C., we have a huge opportunity to leverage Forest Eye, along with recent funding announcements for forest conservation, to secure old growth protections before these forests are gone forever.

Stand.earth just released analysis from old growth monitoring tool, Forest Eye showing that more than half of the most at-risk old growth areas – where the B.C. government should have implemented an emergency logging ban two years ago – have now been destroyed.

Big industry players like Canfor, West Fraser, and Sinclar Group are the culprits that have been predominantly benefitting from this destruction.

Based on data collected through Forest Eye and GIS analysis of historic cutblocks, an estimated 31,800 hectares of candidate old growth deferrals have been logged since April 2020 Old Growth Strategic Review. This is more than 50% higher than the government reported in its most recent tally.

Government underreporting has kept the public in the dark about the true state of old growth, even though this transparency could have been provided by the Ministry of Forests.

The B.C. government committed to a three-year deadline to address the old growth crisis and work with First Nations on a paradigm shift in forest stewardship – and that deadline was up this September 2023. But to this date, not a single recommendation has not been completed.

All of this has led to me losing the trust I once had in the B.C. NDP. And I know a lot of people who share that feeling. It’s critical that in advance of an election year in 2024, the B.C. NDP stops its public relations campaign around old growth and takes meaningful action at the scale and urgency required to fulfill its promises.
