Increase pressure on B.C. decision makers to protect old growth and communities

We’re officially in the middle of the worst wildfire season on record. Millions of people across the continent have been choking on smoky skies under extreme air quality warnings, and hundreds of thousands of our friends and neighbours have been forced to evacuate their homes.

Healthy forests are one of our best protections against climate emergencies like mega wildfires. And at a moment where more than 8 million hectares have already been burned this season, the B.C. government still hasn’t kept its promise to stop old growth logging.

We know that this issue remains at the top of the B.C. government's agenda, yet these vital forest continue to be destroyed. It's time for decision makers to receive a flood of messages from their constituents and be reminded that in the middle of a climate crisis, keeping forests standing should be one of their top priorities

We’re seeing the start of the worst wildfire season in Canada on record and yet the B.C. government still hasn’t stopped old growth logging.

These forests are our best defense and offense to mitigate climate impacts like wildfires. We’re quickly approaching the 3-year deadline of the Old Growth Strategic Review’s (OGSR) 14 recommendations, but – despite the worsening crisis facing forests – this government has not taken a single one to completion. This inaction is incredibly irresponsible.

Horgan’s promise to implement these recommendations was first made in October 2020, which became Eby's October 2022 promise to “accelerate” action to protect old-growth forests within 100 days, and implement a paradigm-shift in forest stewardship to safeguard biodiversity and honour Indigenous rights.

Now more than 220 organizations across British Columbia have issued a declaration called United We Stand for Old-Growth Forests, calling on you and the BC NDP to fulfill their commitments on old-growth: https://bit.ly/old-growth-declaration
