The Maine Legislature passed LD 99, An Act To Require The State To Divest Itself Of Assets In The Fossil Fuel Industry, in 2022. MainePERS must divest the 1.2 billion we have funding the climate crisis, but MainePERS refuses to respect the law.

Dear Dr. Wyke,

I am reaching out to urge MainePERS to follow-through on the fossil fuel divestment mandated by LD 99, “An Act To Require The State To Divest Itself Of Assets In The Fossil Fuel Industry.”

Fossil fuels are not a safe investment, since most of their value will be lost when transitioning to 100% clean energy and leaving the coal, oil and gas in the ground. There is tremendous momentum behind fossil fuel divestment as fossil fuels have become increasingly bad and volatile investments.

Money invested in the fossil fuel industry could be invested into climate solutions for Maine. These funds can provide hundreds of millions of dollars in investment for clean energy in our state.

One of MainePERS fossil fuel investments created an environmental justice disaster, poisoning drinking water for thousands of low-income residents living near the refinery. In the four year time that MainePERS owned this investment, the private equity fund lost ~96% on it.

Pensioners deserve better out of their retirement funds than investment in companies that actively damage the ground on which we walk, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.The climate crisis needs to be addressed with the urgency that science and justice requires. Fossil fuel divestment is part of the urgent action that needs to occur worldwide

Please implement the divestment law that the legislature passed and protect our pensions and the future of Maine.
