Zara (owned by Inditex) produces over 450 million products every year – that’s 1,730,769 each day. With the fast fashion model of the company, many of these items end in landfill. But there’s another energy intensive process in the middle that’s churning out major toxic pollution. The brand’s manufacturing pipeline is riddled with fossil fuels and that’s why it scored a “D+” on our Fossil Free Fashion scorecard.
The fashion industry has been flying under the radar for far too long and not taking responsibility for its role in driving up fossil fuel production and pollution. Our fashion campaign has been calling on fashion companies – big and small – to go beyond commitments and take action to phase out fossil fuels from their production line to their stores. And now it’s Zara’s turn to ramp up its weak climate promises and do more to cut its greenhouse gas emissions.
