Email now: No subsidies for Shell’s LNG Canada

Shell is plowing ahead with plans to build the second phase of its LNG Canada project in B.C. – and now wants taxpayer money to fund it. 🙈

As it stands, LNG Canada would already be one of the most polluting projects in Canada. But to make matters worse, LNG Canada recently announced that it’s abandoning plans to power its terminal with electricity, and instead will revert to using fossil fuels. Powering LNG Canada with fossil fuels would more than double the emissions from the terminal itself and make it impossible for B.C. to meet its 2030 climate target.

This is the leverage Shell is using to bully the B.C. and federal governments into coughing up the cash to pay for its electrification – and there’s a precedent: The provincial and federal governments already subsidized the first phase of this project. We can’t let that happen again.

Email the B.C. and Canadian governments and pressure them to refuse fossil fuel subsidies for LNG Canada.

I recently found out that Shell is prepared to build the second phase of LNG Canada as a gas-fired plant – and I am deeply concerned about the impacts this will have on B.C.’s climate targets, and the country’s at large.

Shell also just reported record profits last year. It would be absolutely outrageous for the government to consider giving Shell any fossil fuel subsidies to electrify the project and cover its ballooning costs. I urge you to refuse any fossil fuel subsidies for Shell and LNG Canada.

As I’m sure you’re aware, burning gas to power an LNG terminal is extremely emissions-intensive. In fact, when the gas-fired Phase 1 of LNG Canada comes online in 2025, it will become the largest single source of climate pollution in B.C. This is significant because according to B.C.’s own Climate Accountability Report, the province is on track to miss both its 2025 target and 2030 target.

If LNG Canada Phase 2 goes ahead – reaching these climate targets will become completely unattainable. It’s not hard to see that Shell is using this leverage to bully your government into giving it more public money. But Shell doesn’t need this money, and doesn’t deserve it either.

If that wasn’t reason enough, LNG Canada isn’t a good economic investment either. As a new report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis reminds us, the costs of building LNG infrastructure in B.C. is much higher than in competing jurisdictions. That makes it clear that Shell is only pushing ahead with this project because it is counting on politicians like you to offer it enough public money to make it profitable.

I urge your governments not to repeat the mistakes you made in the past, when you gave Shell special tax breaks and subsidies to enable Phase 1 to go ahead in the first place.

Giving more fossil fuel subsidies to Shell now would be in direct contradiction to the commitments and statements you’ve already made on this topic. The federal government has said it will phase out fossil fuel subsidies. And the B.C. government has acknowledged that we can’t keep expanding fossil fuels and still expect to reach our climate targets.

It’s time to put your money where your mouth is and tell Shell that if it is going to go ahead with Phase 2, it will have to pay its fair share of taxes.
