Tell the B.C. government to follow through on old growth commitments

When Premier Eby announced his “100 day plan” he committed to accelerate implementation of the old growth recommendations as one of his top priorities after being sworn in. This wouldn’t have happened without the people-power led movement that has grown over the past two years to protect these ancient forests and honour Indigenous rights.

And now over 160 organizations have signed onto a cross-sectoral declaration – United We Stand for Old-Growth Forests – to call on the BC government to follow through on its old growth commitments.

So now’s the time to put pressure on Eby to fulfill his personal promise to accelerate action on old growth in his first 100 days of office, which is February 25, 2023. In partnership, we are planning a mass mobilization to hold the province accountable, with a march and rally scheduled on that same day. We need to remind Eby just how many people are in support of old growth protection at the scale and urgency required.

More than 160 organizations across British Columbia have issued a declaration called United We Stand for Old-Growth Forests, calling on Premier David Eby and the BC NDP to fulfill their commitments on old-growth: https://bit.ly/old-growth-declaration

Signatories of the declaration include the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, the Climate Caucus network of municipal elected leaders, Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) BC Region, and BC General Employees Union (BCGEU).

Collectively, we’re urging Eby to follow through on his October 2022 promise to “accelerate” action to protect old-growth forests within 100 days, and implement a paradigm-shift in forest stewardship to safeguard biodiversity and honour Indigenous rights.

I was encouraged to hear a renewed commitment to accelerate action on old growth, but the reality is that the most at-risk old-growth forests are still being clearcut while BC stalls on enforcing logging deferrals.

The 2020 OGSR recommendations were tied to a three-year framework with the goal to have all implemented in 2023 — to date, not a single recommendation has been fulfilled.

Alongside the declaration, these groups announced a mass march and rally to take place on the 100th day of this commitment. We’re expecting action to be accelerated by that day, February 25.

If it wasn’t already abundantly clear, the majority of people in this province are supportive of old growth protection and we will not accept any more delays or misinformation from the BC NDP.
