A message from Liberty Mutual customers and employees

Eighteen insurance companies (and counting) have cut ties with the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline due to concerns about human rights violations and climate change impacts.

But our latest intel shows that Liberty Mutual is still providing coverage for the project. That’s why customers and employees of Liberty Mutual are coming together to urge Liberty to stop insuring the Trans Mountain pipeline.

Make Liberty a company to be proud of! If you are a policyholder or a current (or former) employee of Liberty Mutual, please add your name.

As customers and employees of Liberty Mutual, we, the undersigned are calling on Liberty Mutual to:

  • Cut all ties to the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline and;
  • Adopt climate and human rights policies that rule out insuring or investing in all projects that are connected to the tar sands, or that lack the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of impacted Indigenous Peoples.

Insurance companies around the world are already feeling the effects of climate change as they pay out billions of dollars in claims from fires, floods, and other impacts of extreme weather events. We know that climate change is driven by the burning of fossil fuels, but some forms of fossil fuels are more polluting than others. Tar sands crude has a 70% larger carbon footprint per barrel produced than the global average. This is why environmental experts have long called for financial institutions like Liberty Mutual to divest from this high carbon source of oil.

The Trans Mountain pipeline does not have the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of all of the Indigenous Nations that are impacted by the project. In fact, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) repeatedly voiced concerns about the project and called upon the Canadian goverment to “immediately cease construction of the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion and cancel all permits, until free, prior, and informed consent is obtained.”

We want to be proud of the companies we do business with or work for; but as long as you are in business with the Trans Mountain pipeline, that is not possible. Please take action to restore our faith in your company by cutting ties with this project and adopting climate and human rights policies. Help us be proud of Liberty Mutual, not embarrassed.
