Fossil fuels pose a serious danger to our communities and the planet regardless of where you live.
The most serious impacts are felt predominantly in BIPOC and low income communities where refineries and other fossil fuel infrastructure are most likely to be located. [1] For too long, whole neighborhoods, cities, and counties have had to deal with elevated rates of asthma, birth defects, cancer, and other devastating illnesses. [2] Even communities without major fossil fuel infrastructure are at risk. Research shows that gas stoves cause asthma in children at the same rate as second smoke [3] and living or working near gas stations can cause cancer and a myriad of other serious health issues. [4]
And as we've seen over the past few years with increasing heat waves, floods, fires, and hurricanes – climate change means deadly and destructive impacts everywhere and is only going to get worse unless we kick society's fossil fuel dependency.
Enough is enough.
Even while national climate action languishes on Capitol Hill, more than 135 cities and counties have taken urgent action by passing SAFE Cities policies that also protect their air, water, and health from toxic fossil fuel pollution. Los Angeles is phasing out oil drilling and prohibiting new gas stations from being built. New York City is electrifying their new and existing buildings. Frontline communities grappling with environmental racism in Richmond and Whatcom County are thwarting new major fossil fuel infrastructure proposals.
To have the best shot at a future safe from fossil fuels we can't wait – we need to ramp up pressure on local governments all across the country – including yours – right now.
