Demand that New Jersey pass the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill

The New Jersey State Pension Fund invests $4.8 billion dollars in fossil fuels. The New Jersey State Pension fund uses our pensions to bankroll fossil fuel companies and fund the climate crisis.

Right now, the New Jersey State Legislature has a bill that would force the New Jersey State Pension fund to divest from the top 200 publicly traded fossil fuel companies. Bill S416/A1733 would force the New Jersey State Pension fund to create a fossil-free portfolio by divesting from energy companies and bringing New Jersey’s investment strategy in line with its energy policy.

Bill S416/A1733 has 40 co-sponsors, but we need to amp up the pressure to ensure that the bill passes.

Never has it been clearer that there are safer and more sustainable investment alternatives to fossil fuel companies. Never has it been clearer that NJ’s pension needs to speed up this transition and align New Jersey’s investment strategy with our energy policy.

NJ should create a FOSSIL-FREE portfolio by divesting from fossil fuel companies. This is the safest and most responsible action that can be taken to protect the long-term financial health and sustainability of our pension portfolio. This will align New Jersey’s investment strategy with our state’s goal of transitioning to 50% renewable energy by 2030.

Passing fossil fuel divestment legislation (S416 / A1733) in Trenton will ensure the public pension system will divest from fossil fuels. There are currently 40 co-sponsors of this bill as of May 2022.

New Jersey must divest the State Pension Fund from fossil fuels now.
