Tell Target Executives: Commit to zero-emissions shipping NOW

Target leadership must own up to the outsized role Target’s fossil-fueled ocean shipping is playing in driving the climate crisis and putting port communities in danger.

Target is the third most-polluting retail ocean importer to the U.S. and that has very real impacts on the public health of port communities. In fact, with 95% of Target’s imports arriving via the West Coast, Target’s dirty shipping contributes to an 8-year lower life expectancy – particularly in Black and brown working-class port-side communities – in West Long Beach, California.

We can’t let Target get away with touting its #TargetZero climate campaign about reducing waste when the health and lives of port communities on the West Coast are currently threatened by retailers’ – including Target’s – fossil-fueled ship pollution.

Dear Target leadership,

I’m writing to you today, ahead of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), to urge you to commit to zero-emissions ocean shipping by 2030.

Target is the third most-polluting retail ocean importer to the U.S. and that has very real impacts for the public health of port communities. In fact, with 95% of Target’s imports arriving via the West Coast, Target’s dirty shipping contributes to an 8-year lower life expectancy – particularly in Black and brown working-class port-side communities – in West Long Beach, California.

In 2019, Target’s U.S. maritime shipping alone emitted over 2 MILLION metric tons of CO2, earning the company the THIRD-most pollutive spot in a recent examination of top retailers’ shipping emissions. The “Shady Ships” study conducted by Pacific Environment and Stand.earth notes that ocean shipping emissions from Target contributes to elevated risks of cancer, 6.4 million childhood asthma cases per year, and is literally killing Black and brown port communities—260,000 premature deaths annually.

"Target’s digital sales have doubled during the pandemic and 95% of its shipments pass through West Coast ports,” said Minneapolis City Councilmember-elect Robin Wonsley Worbolah. “With catastrophic health impacts on the working class Black & brown communities nearby. I’m proud to be in solidarity with the mass multiracial working class coalition that is organizing across the country to demand fossil-fuel free, zero-emissions shipping. Our lives depend on it.”

Clean ocean shipping alternatives already exist, and Target is obligated to its customers to lead the way in 2022.

Specifically, as a customer, I want Target to:

Abandon Dirty Ships NOW: Immediately abandon dirty, fossil-fueled ocean shipping and adopt emissions-reducing technologies like wind-assisted propulsion and slow-steaming.

Set Sail First: Immediately invest in zero-emission ocean shipping alternatives: committing your cargo to the world’s first green hydrogen ships, which are expected to become available as soon as 2024.

Put Zero at the Helm: Commit to 100% zero-emissions ocean shipping as soon as humanly possible, and no later than 2030.
