Norwegian oil giant Equinor plans to build a massive new offshore oil drilling project in a sensitive marine ecosystem off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Equinor talks a big game on sustainability – it even released an 'energy transition' plan in 2022. But Bay du Nord would pollute as much as 8-10 new coal power plants. The proposed oil field is also smack in the middle of an area rich in biodiversity and important for the fishing industry. If a spill occurred, it could take up to 36 days to contain – at best. This project is far too risky for the climate and for the environment.
The good news is, we still have a chance to stop this project. Equinor cares deeply about its public image – and if thousands of us raise the alarm about Bay du Nord, it could force Equinor to think twice about moving forward with this environmentally destructive project.
We urge you to cancel the disastrous Bay du Nord offshore oil drilling project in Canada and invest in renewable energy instead.
