I’m writing today to urge AIG to strengthen its recent climate commitment by:

1. publicly ruling out insurance for all new tar sands extraction, transport, and related infrastructure projects, including the Trans Mountain pipeline network;
2. providing a comprehensive Arctic policy that rules out insurance for all oil and gas exploration and extraction in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and
3. adopting a policy to ensure that clients respect the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) of impacted communities; especially Indigenous communities.

AIG’s announcement to restrict underwriting for and investment in tar sands oil and Arctic energy exploration is a significant first step, but its details are vague and it fails to match the urgency of the climate crisis.

The Trans Mountain Expansion Project violates Indigenous rights and threatens sacred lands, waterways, and our climate. This project, along with all fossil fuel expansion projects, is incompatible with a pathway to reach net zero by 2050. I urge you to follow the 17 other insurers who have already cut ties with Trans Mountain and clearly rule out insurance for the pipeline.

The Gwich’in Steering Committee has also made it clear that Arctic oil and gas exploration and extraction pose grave threats to Indigenous rights in addition to a safe climate. AIG must commit to exit Arctic oil and gas completely.
