AIG – a major fossil fuel insurer – recently committed to phase out support for coal, limit support for the tar sands sector, and stop insuring Arctic energy exploration.
This is a huge step forward, but the details are fuzzy and the announcement didn’t go far enough.
AIG is a known insurer of the Trans Mountain pipeline, and the company is still refusing to clarify whether or not its new policy means it will cut ties with tar sands transport projects like Trans Mountain.
To prove that its climate commitments are serious and not just more greenwash, AIG must clearly rule out support for all new tar sands transport projects – including Trans Mountain. AIG must also clearly rule out all oil and gas exploration in the Arctic, and adopt a policy to ensure that all of the projects it insures have obtained the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of impacted Indigenous communities.
Send an email to top executives at AIG and tell them to stop insuring Trans Mountain and all fossil fuel projects, and start respecting Indigenous rights.
