Call on the state of California to wind down Amazon oil imports

California flag against an oil spill background

Did you know that airlines, cars, food delivery and parcel trucks in California are running on oil exported from the Amazon rainforest?

In 2020, about 50% of the crude oil from Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia was exported to California. On average, that’s the equivalent of 1 in 9 gallons pumped in California originated in the Amazon rainforest.

As a major consumer, the Californian state government holds a crucial role in ensuring that California businesses and residents are not complicit in the expansion of oil drilling in the Amazon.

The “lungs of the planet” and Indigenous communities cannot continue to foot the bill for California’s crude appetite. The state of California must take urgent action to stop the expansion of oil drilling in the Amazon and wind-down the oil extraction – supporting just transitions domestically.

That’s why we’re calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to commit to fast-tracking the wind down of Amazon oil imports. Sign the petition and demand for the #EndAmazonCrude.
