Demand that the bankers of the Coastal Gaslink pipeline respect Indigenous rights and divest.

RCMP invading Wet'suwet'en territory

On February 9, over 100 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) representing millions of members released a letter to the 27 banks financing the Coastal GasLink pipeline – a 670 kilometre fracked gas pipeline proposed through Wet'suwet'en territory in British Columbia, Canada – calling on the banks to divest and withdraw all financial support for this project on human rights, environmental, and climate grounds.

The Coastal GasLink pipeline and associated LNG terminal is the largest private fracked gas investment in Canadian history. The Wet’suwet’en nation has been resisting the construction of the fracked gas pipeline on their territories for more than a decade, and the hereditary chiefs of all five Wet’suwet’en clans have refused to give their consent to the project.

In November, RCMP, armed with tactical weapons and dogs violently arrested Wet’suwet’en land defenders, journalists, and legal observers. By continuing to finance the Coastal GasLink pipeline, all 27 banks are responsible for the colonial violence perpetrated on Indigenous people at the hands of RCMP.

The financiers of this project, including the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), can stop these human rights violations immediately by pulling their funding. Join us in demanding that they do the right thing and divest from the Coastal GasLink pipeline.

At Stand.Earth, we're running a campaign to take on RBC and force them, Canada's #1 fossil bank, to divest from fossil fuels. If you're an RBC customer, employee or shareholder, let us know.

The continued attempts to invade Wet’suwet’en territory to build a pipeline without consent from the hereditary leadership of the Wet'suwet'en Nation violates Indigenous sovereignty. Building a fracked gas pipeline threatens the sacred headwaters of the Wedzin Kwa; it's destroying forests and if completed would facilitate a massive expansion of fossil fuel pollution making the climate emergency worse.

In November -militarized Canadian police- the RCMP armed with tactical weapons violently removed and brutalized Wet’suwet’en land defenders, elders, and journalists from Wet’suwet’en territory in order to clear a path for this fracked gas pipeline. The violent removal of Indigenous people from their territories is contrary to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which both the province of British Columbia and Canada have endorsed and enshrined into legislation, including the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent.

Removal and assault of Indigenous people from their traditional territories is not reconciliation; it’s continued colonial invasion and genocide.

Over 155 Indigenous leadership, community and grassroots groups, and non governmental organizations representing over 25 million people stand with the Wet'suwet'en and demand that you divest from the project. It’s time for you to do the right thing, and defund the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
