Who is powering California?

Did you know that airlines, cars, food delivery and parcel trucks in California are running on oil exported from the Amazon rainforest? In 2020, about 50% of the crude oil from Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia was exported to California. On average, that’s the equivalent of 1 in 9 gallons pumped in California originated in the Amazon rainforest.

California plays an outsized role in the consumption of oil from the Amazon rainforest, which means that the state’s government holds a crucial role in ensuring that California businesses and residents are not complicit in the expansion of oil drilling in the Amazon.

The “lungs of the planet” and Indigenous communities cannot continue to foot the bill for California’s crude appetite. The state of California and major brands must work together with frontline communities to stop the expansion of oil drilling in the Amazon and wind-down the oil extraction already happening there, while also supporting just transitions domestically and abroad.
