AIG must stop insuring and divest from fossil fuels

AIG is a major backer of fossil fuels. The US-based insurance company is the largest coal insurer outside of China, and is among the world’s top three insurers of oil and gas projects.

AIG is also a known insurer of the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline, a project being pushed ahead in Canada in violation of Indigenous rights.

But even while climate-related disasters devastate communities around the world, AIG has no policies in place to limit or end its investments in fossil fuels. This is unacceptable.

Right now, AIG is considering adopting new climate goals—so we need to send a powerful message to AIG CEO Peter Zaffino that he must adopt a strong policy to end insurance and investments in fossil fuels.

Dear Mr. Zaffino,

As one of the world’s largest insurers of coal, oil, and gas, and with billions of dollars in fossil fuel investments, AIG is fueling the climate crisis.

AIG’s support for the expansion of fossil fuels increases risks of wildfires, droughts, and other severe natural disasters. The AIG-insured Trans Mountain pipeline actively harms Indigenous communities.

Time is running out to avoid catastrophic climate change. AIG needs to stop enabling new fossil fuel projects now and phase out support for existing operations that are inconsistent with global climate targets.

AIG must:

Stop insuring new and expanded coal, oil, and gas projects immediately.
Phase out insurance for all fossil fuel companies, starting with coal.
Divest completely from coal, oil, and gas companies.
Respect human rights, including Indigenous people's rights to Free, Prior, and Informed consent. You are currently insuring the Trans Mountain pipeline, which actively violates Indigenous rights.
