Get NYC to Endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

Youth protest in a climate rally in Vancouver.

It's time for New York City to join the international movement for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, which calls for the end of fossil fuel expansion and a just transition to clean, renewable energy.

New York City has taken bold action on climate and local health and safety with work to get gas out of buildings through Local Law 97 and the introduction (and hopefully passage soon) of Intro 2317.

That local action is part of why New York City calling for international action is especially powerful.

Our city council also has a deep and rich history of demanding world leaders take action on global crises. In 1963, New York helped call for a global Treaty banning testing nuclear weapons in our atmosphere. 20 years later, we became one of the first Nuclear-Free Zones on earth.

But on the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, NYC is stuck.

A Resolution to endorse the Treaty, Resolution 1469-2020, was introduced in late 2020 but it's still in the Committee on Environmental Protection, where it's had a hearing but no vote yet.

Fridays For Future NYC, Stand.earth, and allies are working to get a NYC endorsement of the Treaty. We have been requesting virtual meetings with Councilmember Ben Kallos, lead sponsor of the Treaty Resolution, and Councilmember Jim Gennaro, the Chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, to see how we can move the Treaty endorsement forward.

Will you use your voice to amplify this work and help us get meetings with Councilmembers Kallos and Gennaro so we can get this across the finish line?

Send a message to these Councilmembers urging them to support the Treaty and meet with the groups leading the endorsement effort.

Thank you!
