Since last August, Indigenous land defenders and their allies have been on the ground at Ada'itsx/Fairy Creek – unceded Pacheedaht and Ditidaht territories – stopping the Teal Jones logging company from chopping down thousand-year-old trees. But now they're facing the escalation of police violence and the illegal enforcement of the injunction granted to Teal Jones to arrest those on the frontlines.

If the B.C. NDP had kept their election promise to immediately stop logging in at-risk old growth forests, the safety of these peaceful people wouldn't be in jeopardy, and the trees they're standing up to protect wouldn't be at-risk.

Those who have been on the frontlines for over a year need fellow B.C. residents to show their solidarity and email politicians. We need to demand that the police stand down and hold the government accountable for their broken promise to protect old growth.

I’m emailing to urge you to immediately call off the violent RCMP enforcement at Ada'itsx/Fairy Creek.

Constituents in Horgan’s own riding at Ada'itsx/Fairy Creek, unceded Pacheedaht and Ditidaht territories, have been forced to stop old growth logging themselves while the B.C. NDP fails to take real action.
    
These forest defenders, some who are Indigenous people asserting sovereignty on their own land, are now experiencing an escalation in police tactics including violence, excessive force and illegal enforcement of the Teal Jones injunction according to the B.C. supreme court.
    
On July 20, 2021, the B.C. supreme court publicly stated that the RCMP force’s use of “exclusion zones” to place certain areas off limits to protesters, members of the media and observers was unlawful. But, these tactics have been reportedly used in recent weeks.
    
Reports have included the following illegal tactics: Police blocked off roads limiting access to broad swaths of the region, created exclusion zones on Granite main road and on Braden main road, on the way up to Waterfall camp, a photojournalist on assignment for Victoria Buzz was arrested while documenting RCMP enforcement, other members of the media continue to report being blocked from viewing arrests, 'Catch and release' arrests.
    
Reports have included the following violence/excessive force: Targeting of BIPOC land defenders, including a Nuu-chah-nulth youth being dragged by her hair, physical, verbal and sexual assaults, police used pepper spray on 47 people attempting to walk through an exclusion line; and again at their checkpoint, vehicles and personal possessions apprehended and thrown away by RCMP, RCMP continue to confiscate blockaders’ food, water and other critical supplies, dangerous extractions of hard blocks.
    
The new NDP majority government campaigned on an election promise to implement all 14 recommendations of the old growth review panel, which you received in April, 2020. The NDP specifically made a promise during their campaign to implement the report in its totality.
    
One of those recommendations was to ban logging in at-risk old growth forests within 6 months. These deferrals are overdue–they should have been implemented by the end of October, 2020 at the latest. This conflict is a direct result of government inaction.
    
170,000+ people have signed a petition to end logging in at-risk old growth forests across B.C. and according to Sierra Club polls, 85% of British Columbians agree that old growth should be protected.
