As a resident of Victoria, British Columbia, I am calling on you – the Victoria City Council – to take immediate action to protect the ocean.

Scrubbers (sometimes called exhaust gas cleaning systems) are a pollution cheat device that ”wash” ship exhaust with seawater, turning air pollution into acidic thermal carcinogenic wastewater.  85% of scrubbers globally dump that water straight into the ocean without any ability to store it.

This wastewater dumping accelerates the acidification of the ocean, dumps heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons into the marine foodweb where they bioaccumulate, and has a disastrous impact on sea life.

Federal action must be taken swiftly to stop dumping from vessels, including stopping the use of scrubbers and mandating the fuel standard without the scrubber workaround.

I’m writing to urge you and your fellow council members to pass a resolution calling on Transport Canada to implement these measures.
