The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) released a shocking new global report on scrubbers and the evidence is crystal clear (like our oceans should be):
We need Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau to take bilateral action to ban scrubbers in North American Emission Control Area (ECA).
The report found that 85% of scrubbers (the mechanism that “cleans” heavy fossil fuels out of ship exhaust) are open-loop systems. Meaning, they continuously dump toxic, acidic wastewater straight into the ocean.
Wastewater is acidic, thermal pollution, laden with endocrine-disrupting chemicals, heavy metals, and carcinogens - all of which destroy coral reefs, get into the bodies of endangered species like belugas and orcas, and accelerate the acidification of our ocean.
Banning scrubbers must be an international priority in the fight to protect our oceans and address the climate crisis.
Tell Biden and Trudeau to ban scrubbers in the North American ECA.
