Trans Mountain must secure insurance for its dirty tar sands pipeline, or it cannot continue. Making the pipeline un-insurable is a critical way to stop the project in its tracks.
If built, the new Trans Mountain pipeline and tanker project would ship more than 590,000 barrels per day of highly polluting tar sands crude to the B.C. coast. This would increase Canada’s climate emissions and make it impossible to meet our Paris commitments.
We know our strategy is working, because Trans Mountain admitted it publicly. The company recently filed a desperate request asking the energy regulator to keep the identity of its insurers a secret, crediting the pressure from our movement as the reason why its struggling to find insurers still willing to back this dangerous project.
Trans Mountain is right to be afraid. We've already pushed 18 of the pipeline's insurers to back out, but more remain.
