As the world wakes up to the threats fossil fuels pose to our communities and the planet, we're building a brand-new global movement calling on governments of all levels to phase out fossil fuels, starting now.
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty calls on nation states to tackle the threat of fossil fuel expansion the same way they once came together to address the threat of nuclear warfare.
The SAFE Cities movement brings the global call to action home with a challenge to our cities and other local governments to pass concrete policies that phase out fossil fuels and accelerate the clean energy transition in our communities.
Both movements are growing and becoming more powerful by the day. From Canada to California from Boulder to Baltimore from the Amazon Sacred Headwaters to the Rhineland from Capetown to Singapore – and beyond – communities are fighting fossil fuel projects. More often than not, they’re winning! The growing SAFE Cities movement is connecting these neighbors, local groups, elected officials, and government staff who are taking concrete and lasting action to protect community health and safety and address the climate crisis.
At the same time the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty has already been endorsed by hundreds of organizations collectively representing tens of millions of people, and is gaining traction within the halls of the United Nations. The Treaty is aiming to end the exploration for new fossil fuels, phase out existing production in line with a 1.5ºC scenario, and implement a just transition for every worker, community and country.
Taken together, these two efforts have the potential to address the community and global impacts of fossil fuels with the urgency and the scale necessary.
Will you add your name to these efforts and stay ready for opportunities to take action moving forward?
