Whatcom County Council needs to hear from you

Residents attend a Whatcom County Council meeting

Whatcom County Council is considering updates to the rules for fossil fuel projects at Cherry Point. Unfortunately, strong protections in earlier drafts have been watered down in a misguided effort to compromise with Big Oil.

The revised version isn’t good enough — but there’s still time to fix it. Our community has a chance to set an example and put in place the protections we need for our climate, our safety, and for the Salish Sea.

The newest draft ordinance has several major flaws, including:

  • Unregulated expansion of existing oil refineries based on a complicated formula tied to regional population;
  • Elimination of many strong protections we had pushed for under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) that would ensure that rigorous and accurate environmental impact statements; and
  • Exemption for biofuels that are ripe for abuse (for the record, I believe biofuels can be done right, but that doesn’t mean they automatically will be — and they should be subject to the same high standards as other fuels).
