Stand Against Fossil Fuel Expansion (SAFE)

Activists rally in front of the Phillips 66 refinery in Rodeo to stop its expansion.

There's no way around it: the sheer scale of the climate crisis is daunting. Making individual choices – recycling, using less energy, greening your commute – are wonderful, but they're also not enough. The truth is that the vast majority of the problem is being caused by a handful of corporations, and it's past time that we began organizing to reign them in.

SAFE is a movement of neighbours, local groups, and elected officials taking concrete, meaningful action at the right scale to address the climate crisis. Put simply: we’re a growing network of communities Standing Against Fossil Fuel Expansion.

Right now, there’s more oil, gas and coal approved for development than the world can safely burn. If we want a safe climate future, one of the most important things we can do is keep fossil fuels in the ground. And one of the most effective places this can happen is at the local level.
