Canada needs to power past coal. Tell Carney: phase out thermal coal exports!

Thermal coal has devastating impacts on Canada and the world.

Mining, transporting, and combusting coal:

poisons the air, land, and water;
emits greenhouse gases;
causes many human health risks; and
takes capacity away from clean energy.

The Liberal government committed to phasing out thermal coal exports by 2030. Instead, the Port of Vancouver is the premier coal exporter in North America, doubling its thermal coal exports since 2016.

To add insult to injury, almost 75% of the thermal coal exported from the Port of Vancouver comes from the U.S. Why? Because West Coast U.S. ports won’t take them due to environmental and public health risks. Instead, British Columbia’s Lower Mainland residents bear the brunt of environmental and health risks.

It’s time to hold Canadian decision-makers to their promise to power past coal.
